We all know that we should wear sunscreen every day (sunny or overcast) to prevent premature aging and reduce the risk of skin cancer. But finding the right formula that doesn’t make your face feel sticky and greasy while not harming the environment isn’t always easy to find.

“Reef safe” sunscreens are those that do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, two common UV-blocking chemicals, that studies have shown can cause coral bleaching. When coral bleaches, it’s still alive, but it’s under severe stress, which leaves it susceptible to disease and death.

In July 2018, the State of Hawaii banned the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. The city of Key West, Florida, followed suit in early 2019. When both laws go into effect in 2021, people there will only be able to purchase “reef-safe” sunscreens.

**This sunscreen product does not contain either of these reef damaging ingredients.
